The United Kingdom government published a white paper of the Great Repeal Bill on Thursday which aims to incorporate European Union laws into the British judicial system and give Parliament the power to change these laws without consent from the bloc.
“Once EU law has been converted into domestic law, parliament will be able to pass legislation to amend, repeal or improve any piece of EU law it chooses – as will the devolved legislatures, where they have power to do so,” Brexit Secretary David Davis stated.
Davis pointed out that even after the EU laws are repealed and replaced, the UK will be obliged to follow the European Court of Justice (ECJ) case law. This means past ECJ rulings will have the same importance as the decisions of Britain’s Supreme Court.
“Our intention is not to fossilise the past decisions of the CJEU [ECJ] for ever,” Davis claimed.
