At least 80 people were killed in the wildfires raging in Hawaii's Maui County, officials said. The death toll is expected to keep rising as search and rescue operations continue.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the wildfires destroyed around 80% of the town of Lahaina, which was the worst hit by the disaster. Around 1,000 buildings are estimated to have been destroyed, he said. The Lahaina fire was 85% contained late on Friday, with residents briefly allowed to return to the town before the police closed the road again citing safety concerns.
