European Commission Executive Vice-President and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized during a discussion on tariffs at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, that the United States and the EU are "strategic allies" in light of US President Donald Trump's intention to impose new import tariffs on European goods.

"EU and US are strategic allies and especially in the current geopolitical situation where we see that autocracies are challenging rules based on international order is very important for democracies to work together so it is with this spirit of cooperation which we are approaching also the new Trump administration," he added.

Trump has expressed discontent with the EU's trade practices, claiming they treat the US "very, very badly." He highlighted a $350 billion trade deficit to illustrate how he believes the US has been disadvantaged in its trade interactions with the EU.
