Russian Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said on Wednesday that his country should be compensated for the damage caused by "illegal" sanctions imposed against it.

"European countries must understand the following ... Sanctions against the Russian Federation are illegal. We will return to this topic and consider the damage that you have caused to our economy. You will have to compensate for it anyway. How and when is a matter of time," Volodin stated in a Telegram message.

Many countries, including almost all of Europe, introduced sanctions against Moscow in response to its military operations in Ukraine.
