United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday it "certainly looks like" missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi died. "It certainly looks that way to me. It’s very sad," the president told reporters as he departed for a rally in Montana.

Additionally, the president said Saudi Arabia would have to face "very severe" consequences if found responsible for the death of the Washington Post contributor, a vocal critic of the Saudi regime.

Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin pulled out of the Future Investment Initiative summit in Riyadh over Khashoggi, whose whereabouts are still unknown. Meanwhile, reports emerged the Saudi government is planning on placing the blame for Khashoggi's murder on the deputy chief of the country's intelligence, General Ahmed al-Assiri.
