The European Union could delay its decision on Georgia's accession talks indefinitely if the controversial "foreign agents" law is enacted, sources informed the Financial Times on Wednesday.

The ruling Dream Party in Georgia passed legislation mandating that organizations, media outlets, and civil groups receiving over 20% of their funding from foreign sources register as foreign agents, which many fear resembles similar laws in Russia. The proposed bill received months-long backlash from the public and criticism from Brussels that believes, according to the sources, the legislation is not "in line with EU core norms and values."

In March 2022, Georgia applied to join the bloc, a few weeks after Russia began its military operation in Ukraine.
