European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday that the bloc welcomes the discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky held over the phone earlier.
"China's leadership needs to use its influence to bring Russia to end its war of aggression, restore Ukraine's territorial integrity and respect its sovereignty, as a basis for a just peace," the EU representative shared.
He further went on to say that this is an "important, long overdue first step by China in exercising its responsibilities as a member of the United Nations Security Council."
