Earthquake kills at least 20 in Mandalay mosque collapse

At least 20 worshippers were killed when the Shwe Pho Shein Mosque in Mandalay collapsed during prayers today after powerful earthquakes, rescue workers told Yangon Times on Friday.

"The mosque caved in during worship. Three sections were destroyed, and many remain trapped. The toll may rise," a rescuer said. Teams are digging through rubble to find survivors.

Meanwhile, Myanmar's junta declared an "emergency situation" in Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and four other regions, citing widespread quake damage. Authorities have called for international assistance as rescue teams battle to reach survivors after multiple structures collapsed across the affected region.

Myanmar's ruling junta's spokesperson said on Monday that the number of people who died in the country after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake reached 2,056.According to the spokesperson's statement, 3,900 more people were injured, while 270 others were still missing. Tonga hit by 7.1-magnitude earthquake
The Pacific island nation of Tonga was struck by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake's epicenter was around 90 km southeast of Pangai, the administrative center of Tonga's Haʻapai island group.The USGS said there is a potential threat of a tsunami. There is currently no information on casualties and damage.
Myanmar earthquake death toll exceeds 1,700
The number of fatalities in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has risen to 1,700, according to the ruling junta's estimates released on Sunday. At least 3,400 people have been injured and around 300 are missing.The death toll is expected to increase further as rescue services have not reached all impacted areas. The earthquake also hit neighboring Thailand, killing at least 17.
Another 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar
A 5.1-magnitude aftershock was measured near Mandalay in Myanmar on Sunday, the largest since the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday. There is currently no information on the consequences of the aftershock.At least 1,644 people have been killed in Myanmar since Friday and at least 3,408 people have been injured. Rescue services are still trying to reach more remote affected areas.
