At least 20 worshippers were killed when the Shwe Pho Shein Mosque in Mandalay collapsed during prayers today after powerful earthquakes, rescue workers told Yangon Times on Friday.
"The mosque caved in during worship. Three sections were destroyed, and many remain trapped. The toll may rise," a rescuer said. Teams are digging through rubble to find survivors.
Meanwhile, Myanmar's junta declared an "emergency situation" in Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and four other regions, citing widespread quake damage. Authorities have called for international assistance as rescue teams battle to reach survivors after multiple structures collapsed across the affected region.
