The European Commission stated on Thursday that it referred Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) as it believes the Hungarian Protection of National Sovereignty Act is in breach of EU law. The Commission previously raised concerns with the Hungarian government, which insisted it complied with EU legislation.
The Commission claimed the Hungarian law contradicts several fundamental rights from the EU Charter, including the freedom of expression and information, the freedom of association, and the presumption of innocence. In addition, it found the Hungarian legislation violates several fundamental freedoms of the internal market.
