German govt to discuss gas tax exemptions

EPA-EFE/CLEMENS BILAN

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner announced on Friday that the federal government would consider making tax exemptions for gas purchases as part of its efforts to reduce living costs.

"We shouldn't burden gas customers even more. Therefore, I will examine all legal and political options to exempt gas from VAT. We don't need new burdens, but relief for the broad middle," Lindner shared in a Twitter post.

Gas deliveries from Russia to Germany through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline were impaired over a dispute related to the turbine repair and its transfer back to Germany. Meanwhile, Russian coal imports to the European Union are set to be completely banned from August 10.
