German lawmakers adopt €500B spending package

The German parliament passed on Tuesday the debt brake reform and €500 billion spending package championed by the prospective chancellor, German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz. 513 lawmakers voted in favor, including from the CDU, the Christian Social Union (CSU), the Social Democratic Party (SPD), and the Greens, while 207 voted against. The package includes funds for defense, infrastructure, climate, and military aid for Ukraine.

The legislation will now head to Germany's other legislative body, the Bundesrat, where it will be considered on Friday. It must be approved by a two-thirds majority of the 69 members.
