United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in Warsaw on Thursday that he hopes US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will make "real progress" towards denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula when they meet in Vietnam later this month.
Pompeo stressed that Washington's goal for the second meeting between Trump and Kim is to "get as far down the road as we can" on the issue of denuclearization. The US top diplomat is in Warsaw for the conference on Middle East and will also be meeting with his South Korean counterpart Kang Kyung-wha in the Polish capital to discuss the upcoming Trump-Kim summit.
Last week, Trump confirmed his second summit with Kim will take place on February 27 and 28 in Hanoi and noted he looks forward to the two leaders "advancing the cause of peace." The US president also praised Kim's leadership and claimed North Korea has the potential to become an "economic powerhouse."
