United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday the US is “ready” to work towards diplomatically ending the conflict in Syria which has been going on since 2011 and called on Russia to join the efforts of the “civilized world” to solve the issue.
“We are ready to throw our weight and resources behind diplomacy. We are ready to help bring this conflict to an end,” Haley claimed. “The United States is ready to do our part. Russia, too, needs to do its part,” she added.
The US envoy noted it is necessary for Russia to choose whether it will support “the civilized world” or “an Assad government that brutally terrorizes its own people.” Haley urged Russia to “stop covering for Assad” and start cooperating with the US in order to “stabilise the situation in a deliberate, realistic and concerted way in support of the political process.”
Russia has condemned last week’s US attack on Syria and President Vladimir Putin stated it may have been “orchestrated” to frame Assad for allegedly using chemical weapons, while US President Donald Trump accused Putin of supporting “evil” Assad.
