Ifo: German business climate falls further in January

German business climate worsened in January, with the Business Climate Index falling to 85.2 compared to the 86.3 revised value from December, the Institute for Economic Research (Ifo) said in its latest report published on Thursday. The January reading was lower than predicted by analysts.

German business expectations deteriorated for the second month in a row. Meanwhile, the Current Assessment Index declined from 88.5 in December to 87 in January. The Expectations Index decreased from 84.2 in December to 83.5 in January.

"Companies were slightly more satisfied with their current business. Expectations also improved, but remained pessimistic. The order backlog continues to decline, albeit not as sharply as at the end of the year," the report added.
