The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots is checking if it has the authority to subpoena Republican members of Congress and force them to cooperate, the committee chairman, Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson (pictured) said on Sunday.

"I think there are some questions of whether we have the authority to do it," Thompson told NBC. "We're looking at it. If the authorities are there, there'll be no reluctance on our part," he added.

Earlier, several allies of former President Donald Trump, including ex-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, were held in contempt of Congress over their refusal to testify before the committee.
