Kazakhstan's Health Ministry said on Sunday that 164 people lost their lives in protests that have been raging across the country over the past week.

At least 16 police forces and national guard members were killed last week, the government confirmed. However, it remains uncertain whether this tally was included in the total death toll unveiled by the Health Ministry.

The presidential office noted that around 5,800 people were detained by police during last week's protests. The unrest prompted Russia to transfer a number of its units serving in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) to Kazakhstan to help in maintaining order.
