Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov (pictured) said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is kept informed about the escalation in the conflict between the Russian government and the mercenary Wagner Group. Peskov added that "necessary measures are being taken" without providing details.

Earlier in the day, Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed the Russian military attacked his forces killing a "huge number" of fighters. The Russian Defense Ministry denied his claims and the Federal Security Service (FSB) opened a criminal case against Prigozhin. Local media reports allege that the FSB has also been put on high alert in Moscow and that armored vehicles could be seen in the streets of Rostov, from where Prigozhin said that Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu directed the strike on Wagner forces.
