Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said individuals that broke through police barriers and stormed the nation's Congress, its highest court and the presidential palace will be found and punished.
The head of government blamed the incident on "vandals and fascists," denouncing former President Jair Bolsonaro for allegedly "encouraging" the masses in some of his speeches that preceded the incident. "This is also his responsibility and the parties that supported him," Lula said. "They took advantage of the silence on Sunday, when we are still setting up the government, to do what they did," he concluded.
The uprising of Bolsonaro supporters who refuse to accept his election defeat resembled the United States insurrection of 2021 when the backers of former US President and Bolsonaro-ally, Donald Trump, stormed the Capitol building while Congress was in session.
