A.P. Moller-Maersk announced on Wednesday its willingness to "operate limited barge services into and out of the Port of Baltimore" after the Baltimore Captain of the Port (COTP) revealed that a third temporary alternate channel, which will have a depth of 20 feet, will be available for access to the port.
Previously, the Danish cargo enterprise had expressed concerns over the insufficiency of the two existing alternate channels, as they were not deep enough to accommodate their container vessels.
Last month, a ship chartered by Maersk collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in the collapse of the bridge and sealing off the entrance to the port. Six individuals lost their lives in the incident.
