UnitedHealthcare shooter Luigi Mangione's defense team stated that prosecutors should be prevented from asking for the death penalty, claiming that United States Attorney General Pam went against protocols and standard practices by turning the decision into a "political stunt."
Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, wrote in a court submission that "because the Attorney General has chosen to proceed in this way, Mr. Mangione’s Due Process rights have already been violated and the manner in which the Government has acted has prejudiced the grand jury pool and has corrupted the grand jury process."
Additionally, she claimed that "the United States government intends to kill Mr. Mangione as a political stunt."
