A major blackout plunged nearly all of Puerto Rico into darkness early Tuesday, affecting over 1.2 million customers, according to Luma Energy, the company managing the island’s electricity distribution.
The company said that the outage, which began at 5:30 a.m. (local time), prompted the firm to activate emergency operations and collaborate with Genera and other energy partners to restore power. Preliminary findings suggest the outage stemmed from a failure in an underground transmission line, though investigations continue. Luma has initiated a phased restoration process, warning it could take 24 to 48 hours, contingent on conditions.
Earlier, Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi confirmed ongoing efforts to restore power through plants in San Juan and Palo Seco. He demanded swift action and transparency from Luma and Genera, urging them to expedite repairs and keep the public informed.
