The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk Pawel Adamowicz (pictured), 53, died on Monday following a stabbing attack during a charity event, officials stated.
"It was impossible to win against everything that had happened to him. God rest his soul," Polish Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski said after the failed surgery.
Adamowicz suffered serious abdominal injuries during the attack and passed away after five hours of surgery. The detained suspect has allegedly shouted that the Civic Platform party, which had supported Adamowicz's re-election, had wrongfully imprisoned him.
