Faisal Mekdad was named as the new foreign minister of Syria, a decree signed by President Bashar Assad revealed on Sunday.
Mekdad will take over the ministry after 79-year-old minister, Walid Muallem, passed away earlier this week. The new top Syrian diplomat was a deputy foreign minister during Muallem's term.
Meanwhile, former Syrian United Nations envoy, Bashar Jaafari, was promoted to deputy foreign minister while his post was taken by Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh who used to be a Syrian representative at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
