Billionaire and new Twitter CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Monday that his spacecraft manufacturing company SpaceX bought an ad campaign on Twitter Inc. for its satellite internet constellation Starlink in order to test the platform's advertising in Australia and Spain.
Musk explained that the reasoning behind the move is to run a trial of Twitter's regional advertising performance, tweeting that "SpaceX Starlink bought a tiny – not large – ad package to test the effectiveness of Twitter advertising in Australia & Spain. Did same for FB/Insta/Google."
In October, the entrepreneur took aim at Twitter advertising, saying that "low relevancy ads are spam, but highly relevant ads are actually content." Last week saw the introduction of a new subscription policy for the platform's blue checkmark system, aimed at reducing the number of ads by half. According to Musk, the amount generated by the $8 badge price will be used to "pay the bills," as Twitter cannot rely on ads as its sole source of income.
