South Korean President Park Geun-hye told the country’s parliament that she is prepared to step down from office as soon as political parties come to an agreement that would enable a smooth transition of government, she stated in an address to the legislative assembly on Tuesday.

Park was called on by her supporters to resign “honorably” instead of being impeached, as the opposition suggested. During her address, Park apologized for her doings.

The news comes in the light of a corruption scandal in South Korea which involves Park and her close confident Choi Soon-sil.

Over the weekend, over 800,000 people protested, demanding Park steps down.
