The Spanish National Police Corps (CNP) notified on Thursday the Audiencia Nacional, the country's federal court, of the package sent to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez that contained what was described as a pyrotechnic device.
The prime ministerial security department intercepted the package on November 24 and neutralized it. The device was sent in an envelope that was addressed to Sanchez. The Interior Ministry said it ordered the very same day "extreme measures" to protect public buildings and institutions, especially those that provide postal services.
The ministry added that the police have started an official investigation along with Spain's intelligence service, the General Commissariat of Information (CGI). It also hinted at a possible connection between this case and similar packages sent to Ukraine's embassy in Madrid, a company in Zaragoza, the air base Torrejon de Ardo, and in the meantime, the Defense Ministry.
