Berlin is planning to halve imports of oil from Russia amid that country's military operations in Ukraine, Spiegel reported on Friday, citing a letter from German Economic Affairs and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck.
According to the letter seen by the outlet, Germany is preparing to "rapidly" reduce its dependence on Moscow's energy products to "25% already now in the foreseeable future," with the goal of becoming "practically independent" by the end of 2022. Moreover, the country is planning to decrease the imports of Russian natural gas to 30% by the end of this year, with full autonomy to be achieved by the end of 2024.
Earlier this week, Habeck reiterated the words of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and stressed Germany is still not ready to impose sanctions on Russia's energy products.
