Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida could have a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as later in the day, Nikkei reported on Thursday.
In that case, the call would come two days after Kishida had a telephone encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he stressed Japan's support for that country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Kishida also insisted Tokyo will take appropriate steps to ensure a diplomatic solution to the crisis between Moscow and Kiev.
