Robert Downey Jr. earned his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor portraying Lewis Strauss in Christian Nolan-directed "Oppenheimer," who served as the head of the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1946.
The 58-year-old actor had earlier received nominations for Best Actor for his role in "Chaplin" in 1993 and Best Supporting Actor for "Tropic Thunder" in 2009. Christopher Nolan's biopic "Oppenheimer" garnered the most nominations at the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, with Cillian Murphy, the actor behind the central character of J. Robert Oppenheimer, securing a nomination in the category for Best Actor.
Emily Blunt, who played Katherine Oppenheimer, was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award but did not secure the accolade, which instead went to Da'vine Joy Randolph for her role in "The Holdovers."
