United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Friday that his department sanctioned Argentina's former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and the country's former Minister of Planning Julio Miguel De Vido for their "involvement in significant corruption during their time in public office," barring the two former officials and their families from entering the US.
"CFK and De Vido abused their positions by orchestrating and financially benefitting from multiple bribery schemes involving public works contracts, resulting in millions of dollars stolen from the Argentine government. Multiple courts have convicted CFK and De Vido for corruption, undermining the Argentine people's and investors' confidence in Argentina's future," Rubio stated.
Kirchner served two terms as Argentina's president from 2007 to 2015, after which she became the country's vice president. In December 2022, while serving as the vice president, she was sentenced to six years in prison in a corruption case.
