Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Tuesday that his province will impose a 25% tax on electricity it sends to the United States, specifically 1.5 million homes in Minnesota, Michigan, and New York, in response to US President Donald Trump's tariff.
"President Trump underestimates the Canadian people," Ford told the Wall Street Journal in an interview. He reiterated his previous promise that if Trump imposes even more tariffs on April 2, Ontario will shut down its electricity exports to the US completely and redirect the energy to local manufacturers.
Ontario's leader also warned about stockpiling the nickel it usually sells to the US and sending it to other markets if Trump adds more tariffs. Currently, Canada reportedly sells around 50% of the nickel it produces to American companies and the US Department of Defense.
