German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to "avoid further military escalation in the Middle East."

Earlier, Scholz also expressed concern about the danger of a regional war in the Middle East during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Iran has repeatedly vowed to retaliate against Israel following the murder of Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of the Hamas Palestinian Islamist organization, in Tehran on July 31. Both Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of being responsible for the assassination.
