United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he "likes" his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and that "he likes me," underscoring his belief that "any problem" Israel has with Ankara "I can solve."
Speaking at the Oval Office along with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump described Erdogan as "tough" and "smart," and claimed to have joked with him about Turkey taking over Syria after its civil war essentially ended. Previously, Netanyahu insisted that Turkey must not use Syria to strike Israel from it.
Earlier, it was reported that Netanyahu was trying to persuade the US against selling a contingent of F-35 jets to Turkey due to Ankara's influence in Syria, which was the reason why Israel launched its recent attacks on the country in the middle. Turkey retaliated by describing Israel as "the greatest threat to the security of our region."
