Schumer thinks gov't shutdown will be avoided

United States House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed on Monday his belief Congress will be able to agree on a new stopgap bill to keep the government funded short-term and avoid a shutdown.

Speaking to reports at Capitol Hill, Schumer urged both the Democrats and the Republicans to act "in good faith" as "any delay or poison pill could push us into a shutdown." He also remarked that the agreement on the funding "could have been reached weeks ago."

The stopgap bill presented by House Speaker Mike Johnson did not receive enough support in the lower congressional chamber. Meanwhile, Johnson unveiled a new version, expected to be voted on later in the week.
