The United Kingdom's Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Scotland cannot organize another independence referendum without approval from Westminster.
In a unanimous vote, the judges ruled that Scotland's parliament does not have the power to legislate such an act. According to them, the question of Scotland's independence is a constitutional matter, and therefore the power to decide on that is in the hands of the British parliament.
The ruling came amid renewed attempts to organize such a referendum, mostly by the Scottish National Party (SNP) and its leader, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who said that Britain's northern region could stage another vote in 2023.
