Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she spoke with Britain's newly elected Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who took the post on Tuesday.

"Constructive call with Rishi Sunak tonight," Sturgeon said, noting she looks forward to "further engagement soon." In the call, Sturgeon expressed her fears that "further austerity will do real damage to people & public services" and said she hopes London and Edinburgh build a relationship "based on mutual respect."

Sturgeon previously complained about not receiving a call from former Prime Minister Liz Truss for more than a month since she took office.
