British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will not seek a relationship with the European Union similar to the one Switzerland has, the Sunday Times reported on Monday. The news comes as the new government in the United Kingdom decides on the direction of the upcoming talks with the EU as the two sides try to resolve outstanding issues.
The report stated that some Conservatives have been advocating for "closer economic ties" with the bloc. However, sources said a large number of Tories warned Sunak against a Swiss-style deal, threatening political chaos for the new PM if the Brexit agreement is softened. British Foreign Minister James Cleverly seemed to indicate recently that the UK could drop the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol bill as it seeks compromise with the EU.
