The Taiwanese government announced on Wednesday it has submitted a formal application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

"Applying to join the CPTPP is an important economic and trade policy that the government has worked hard to promote for a long time," the governing body's spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng stated.

The news comes less than a week after China, which claims sovereignty over Taiwan, applied for membership in the CPTPP.
