Former United States President Donald Trump's legal team on Monday asked the country's Supreme Court (SCOTUS) to stop the transfer of his tax return records to the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee.
If the House panel, controlled by the Democrats, is allowed access to Trump's tax data, "it will undermine the separation of powers and render the office of the Presidency vulnerable to invasive information demands from political opponents in the legislative branch," Trump's attorneys wrote in the document that specified their request.
Alleging legislative purposes, the committee has been seeking the documents in question since 2019 and the former president suffered several legal defeats recently in an attempt to shield the tax return information as he believes the requests are politically motivated.
