Turkey's government proposed a meeting between Turkish and Syrian foreign ministers in the latter half of January, potentially in a third country, according to a statement made by Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Saturday.
"We said let's do it in the second half of January. The meeting can take place in a third country," NTV cited Cavusoglu as saying. While it is unclear where the meeting will occur, Cavusoglu mentioned the possibility of Moscow hosting the negotiations. Furthermore, he stressed that "political steps" are needed for Ankara to withdraw its forces from Syria.
The defense ministers of Russia, Syria, and Turkey already held trilateral talks in Moscow earlier this week to discuss ways to resolve the Syrian crisis. Efforts to find a political resolution to the conflict have been ongoing for many years since the conflict began in 2011, with the Assad Regime currently controlling the majority of Syria's territories.
