Alan Duncan (pictured), outgoing United Kingdom Minister of State for Europe and the Americas, warned in his resignation letter on Monday that his country's strengthening role in Europe and "beyond" is being jeopardized by the "dark cloud of Brexit."
"It is tragic that just when we could have been the dominant intellectual and political force throughout Europe, and beyond, we have had to spend every day working beneath the dark cloud of Brexit," the letter read. Duncan also expressed regret that Prime Minister Theresa May's term ended after three years due to her failure to get the Brexit deal through Parliament.
The outgoing minister noted that his resignation comes "in anticipation of the change on Wednesday," referring to the expected succession of May by former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who strongly leads in the Conservative Party's leadership race.
