United Nations (UN) Security Council (SC) adopted on Saturday the resolution to support the ceasefire in Syria, according to TASS. The report also stated that the council agreed to the peace talks between Syrian government and rebel groups in Astana, Kazakhstan, in early 2017.
Russia and Turkey introduced a draft of the resolution on Syria to the UN Security Council yesterday. All 15 country-members voted unanimously for the proposal that was brought forward today. SC members welcomed the progress of the Moscow and Ankara agreement, highlighting “the importance of its full and immediate implementation.”
The ceasefire agreement fell into place on December 30 when three documents were signed. The first guaranteed the ceasefire between government forces and rebel groups, the second introduced the package of measures to monitor the truce, and the third declared readiness to start peace negotiations to resolve the Syrian crisis.
