UN envoy urges ceasefire amid escalating conflict in Lebanon

UNSPLASH / JONATHAN ANSEL MOY DE VITRY

Muhannad Hadi, speaking on behalf of UN Middle East envoy Tor Wennesland, urged all parties involved in the Lebanon conflict to agree to an immediate ceasefire on Monday.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Hadi called for a truce "anchored in the full implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701," a framework established in 2006 to end regional violence. He welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at halting hostilities, as Israeli strikes have relentlessly targeted Hezbollah-controlled areas in Beirut's southern suburbs for the past two days.

The call for calm comes amid discussions in Israel about a potential ceasefire with Hezbollah. Benny Gantz, leader of the National Unity Party and a former Israeli minister, has publicly urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to disclose the details of the agreement, expected to be reviewed by the security cabinet on Tuesday.
