United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer (pictured) will retire at the end of this term, NBC News reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources familiar with his thinking.
Considering that Breyer is a liberal justice, his departure could enable US President Joe Biden to at least secure one spot for a younger liberal justice that will succeed Breyer, theoretically for several decades, according to the report. Breyer is 83 years old and has been a Supreme Court justice since August 1994.
Biden's predecessor Donald Trump had appointed three conservative justices to the Supreme Court, solidifying the 6-3 conservative majority in the court.
