The United States will delay the imposition of additional tariffs on certain goods from the United Kingdom, India, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Austria by 180 days, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai (pictured) announced on Wednesday, adding that the decision was made in order to grant "additional time to complete the ongoing multilateral negotiations on international taxation at the OECD and in the G20 process."
If the talks yield no tangible results, the US will impose 25% tarrifs on certain goods from the six countries, Tai explained. "The United States remains committed to reaching a consensus on international tax issues through the OECD and G20 processes. Today's actions provide time for those negotiations to continue to make progress while maintaining the option of imposing tariffs under Section 301 if warranted in the future," she concluded.
Washington has, on June 2, 2020, launched a probe regarding the digital services tax under 10 different jurisdictions. In January 2021, the mentioned six countries were accused by the US of discriminating against American companies.
