The United States Northern Command deployed the USS Spruance, a second guided-missile destroyer, to patrol the waters off the US-Mexico border.
Northern Command General Gregory Guillot said that the "USS Spruance's deployment as part of US Northern Command's southern border mission brings additional capability and expands the geography of unique military capabilities working with the Department of Homeland Security." The Northern Command said in a news release that the destroyer will aid in "combating maritime related terrorism, weapons proliferation, transnational crime, piracy, environmental destruction and illegal seaborne immigration."
Last week, Northern Command announced that it deployed the USS Gravely, which is the first one they sent to patrol the US areas near the country's southern border.
