Major stocks on Wall Street traded higher at the opening bell on Thursday as investors assessed US President Donald Trump's announcement that new tariffs of 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada and a further 10% tariff would be added to existing duties on China are set to be implemented on March 4.
Investors were also busy analyzing key economic data, including reports on initial jobless claims and gross domestic product (GDP) figures. Meanwhile, Nvidia's stock experienced an uptick following the release of quarterly results and future outlook that surpassed expectations.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.42% or 181 points. The Nasdaq 100 gained 0.74%. The S&P 500 increased by 0.49%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 0.48% or 210 points at the open, with Amazon.com Inc. trading 2.08% higher. The Nasdaq 100 increased 0.74% and the S&P 500 gained 0.49%, dragged up by Warner Brothers Discovery Inc. adding 10.86%. The euro lost 0.48% to the dollar at 3:59 pm ET to sell for $1.04355.
