The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Monday calling for the United Nations to remove Russia as a member, including from its Security Council. The ministry argues that the legal issue of the Russian Federation as the successor to the USSR remains unsolved and that Russia must go through the legal procedure to be admitted to the UN as a member.
"The actions of the Russian Federation are contrary to the concept of a "peace-loving" state. Three decades of its illegal presence in the UN have been marked by wars and seizure of other countries' territories, forceful change of internationally recognized borders, and attempts to satisfy its invasive and neo-imperial ambitions," Ukraine argued. It added that Russia has abused its power in the Security Council, using the veto 31 times since 1991, "almost twice as many as any other permanent member," warning that it is "only a matter of time" when its actions "will destroy the entire UN system."
