The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor's office requested the detention of an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, according to media reports.
The prosecutor's office said Gonzalez is under suspicion for "usurpation of functions," of the country's electoral authority, "conspiracy" and "sabotage." The office also said it was a consequence of the opposition leader failing to respond to the summons to testify about the activity of a website that disputed the result of the presidential election.
The country's electoral authority claimed the election was won by Maduro, whereas the opposition declared Gonzalez as the winner.
