South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on Thursday that his country and Japan are ready to make further progress in their relations despite the issues they had in the past.

"There are discrepancies between the stances of the peoples of South Korea and Japan over historical and other issues. But, regarding South Korea–Japan ties, we should think about what to do for our future generations," Yoon said at a press conference at his office, noting the importance of strengthening the ties between the two countries amid the threat North Korea poses.

Although allies when it comes to the tensions between Pyongyang and the rest of the region, Japan and South Korea have had many issues throughout the years, including both countries' claims on Liancourt Rocks and their different approaches to shared history, when the latter was the former's colony.
